Ajax Defender Jakov Medić Set to Join Norwich City

Bundesliga News

Ajax has confirmed that defender Jakov Medić is set to move from Amsterdam to Championship club Norwich City. A deal has been reached between the two clubs for the 26-year-old Croatian to make the switch this summer. Medić spent the previous season on loan at VFL Bochum in the Bundesliga, who were subsequently relegated to the second division. The exact transfer fee remains undisclosed, although his contract with Ajax was set to run until 2028.

Medić only joined Ajax in the summer of 2023, arriving from fellow German club St Pauli for a reported fee of €3 million. He made just nine senior appearances for Ajax during the 2023/2024 season, scoring once. During his loan spell at Bochum last year, he featured in 23 matches, also scoring a single goal. Prior to his time at St Pauli, Medić enjoyed two productive seasons with Wehen Wiesbaden. His career has largely been spent playing in the German second division.

Given that Medić was unlikely to feature regularly for Ajax and considering his long contract, his departure is not particularly surprising. However, the sale does draw renewed attention to what many perceive as poor recruitment decisions at the club in recent seasons, especially handing a long contract to a player who offered minimal return on the pitch.
