Alvaro Arbeloa Confirms Real Madrid Departure: Prioritizing the Club’s Best Interests

Football

Alvaro Arbeloa has confirmed his departure from Real Madrid, a move widely anticipated as the season concludes. In his farewell remarks, Arbeloa revealed that his decision-making throughout his time at the club was consistently geared towards what he believed was best for Real Madrid, rather than his own personal approach.

Speculation surrounding Arbeloa’s future has been rife, with Jose Mourinho’s potential return as manager next week also a topic of discussion, contingent on the club’s presidential elections.

“I hope this is simply a ‘goodbye for now.’ Real Madrid has always felt like home to me. I’ve been connected to this club for two decades; it’s my home. This will be my final match of the season, and I’m uncertain if it marks the end of my chapter as Real Madrid manager – one never truly knows. I intend to savor it and am focused on securing a victory,” Arbeloa stated, subsequently confirming his departure.

Arbeloa: “I aimed to act in the club’s best interest, not my own.”

A significant point of discussion during Arbeloa’s four-month tenure was his relationship with the players, as several public disagreements came to light. Arbeloa expressed no animosity towards these players but acknowledged that the club’s needs influenced his choices.

“I am deeply grateful for our shared experiences. I understand that at 25, the dynamics of relationships can change. We’ve had disagreements, which is natural. We’ve navigated them constructively, maintaining mutual respect. Opportunities arose as they did, and for me, how one handles circumstances is always paramount. I approached it in the most effective way possible, with Real Madrid as my priority.”

“Over the past few months, my thoughts have been more on Real Madrid than myself, but I acted in the club’s best interest. My perspective wasn’t the same as it was during my years in the academy. At a different club, things might have been handled differently, but this was the path I had to take. I have no regrets.”

“I maintain good relationships with almost everyone,” he added, subtly indicating that there were exceptions.

He elaborated on this point, explaining that he was unable to operate entirely according to his own methods. When asked about specific instances where he would have done things differently, Arbeloa chose not to go into detail.

“Many times (laughs). I was aware of the team’s situation upon my arrival and the challenges I faced. Had I been in charge from the start, it would have unfolded differently. However, this is the hand I was dealt, and I strived to do my utmost, not necessarily in my own way, but in the most advantageous way for the club. We achieved many positive outcomes, and I am satisfied with our accomplishments.”

When directly questioned if his decision-making had been influenced by higher authorities, Arbeloa steered away from a definitive statement, saying, “I am not suggesting that, nor is that the interpretation. No one from the club intervened; it was simply a matter of me prioritizing the club’s needs.”

“I hope to return one day” – Alvaro Arbeloa

Arbeloa appeared somewhat reflective during his final pre-match press conference.

“Nearly all of them have contributed to my growth as a coach and as an individual. I’ve had interactions with everyone, engaged in discussions, and we’ve sometimes agreed and sometimes disagreed. The advantage I had was my own experience playing at their level; I’ve been in similar situations and understand their perspectives, which often differ from a coach’s.”

“It’s easier for me to empathize with them than for them to fully grasp my position. I depart with immense gratitude; they have made me a better person and brought joy to my daily work. I am profoundly thankful to the club for this opportunity. I leave with gratitude after these eight years, having forged many friendships. I hold onto the hope of returning someday.”

“No possibility of me joining Mourinho’s staff”

Given reports that Mourinho was interested in appointing a former Real Madrid player to his backroom team, it was speculated that Arbeloa might be considered. However, Arbeloa dismissed this notion.

“I’m not here to discuss hypothetical situations. Mourinho has an exceptional coaching staff and receives excellent support. If he joins, he will naturally bring his own team, as is customary. There is absolutely no chance of me working alongside him. I have dedicated the last four months to Real Madrid; from this point forward, my focus shifts to myself. I’ve taken this step and feel prepared for new challenges.”

Arbeloa’s final game at the helm will be on Saturday night at 21:00 CEST at the Santiago Bernabeu, facing Athletic. This match will also see the Bernabeu honor Dani Carvajal in what is also his final game for the club.
