Arsenal Shows Interest in Highly Sought-After La Liga Defender

Football

Arsenal has a history of acquiring talent from Spain’s La Liga, and this trend might continue in 2026. Following last summer’s successful signings of Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and Cristhian Mosquera from Valencia, the North London club is now reportedly eyeing Celta Vigo’s Oscar Mingueza.

According to reports from the BBC (via ED), Arsenal has joined the growing list of clubs interested in the 26-year-old defender. Mingueza is valued for his versatility, possessing the ability to effectively play at either full-back position.

Mingueza, who has recently changed agents, is widely expected to depart Celta Vigo at the conclusion of the current season. His contract is set to expire in June, and there have been no indications of his desire to extend his stay at Balaidos, although club officials still hold out hope for a renewal.

Marco Garcés, Celta’s sporting director, has acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Mingueza’s future, stating, “The situation is up in the air. He knows that he has an offer from us, and we hope that he will make a decision. He has not responded yet.” Despite this, there remains a possibility of reaching an agreement.

Premier League Move Appears Likely for Mingueza

However, Celta’s optimism regarding Mingueza’s contract renewal may be more wishful thinking than a concrete expectation. His departure as a free agent seems increasingly probable, which would also be a setback for Barcelona. Barcelona holds a 50% sell-on clause for their former player, which would become void if he leaves Galicia without a transfer fee.

England appears to be the most likely destination for Mingueza. While Juventus had previously expressed interest and a move seemed imminent, that possibility has since faded. Liverpool has also been monitoring his situation, but Arsenal may now be poised to make a move for the defender.
