Atletico Madrid is nearing a deal to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, a player who has been frequently linked with the club recently. The 25-year-old midfielder appears set to depart the Midlands following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League this season.
Previously, Los Colchoneros showed interest in Atalanta midfielder Ederson dos Santos, reportedly agreeing on terms with his agent. However, following interest from Manchester United, which also extended to Gomes, the terms for Ederson’s transfer increased for Atletico. Consequently, they redirected their focus to Gomes.
Atletico Reach Agreement in Principle for Gomes
According to Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid has now reached an agreement in principle for Gomes, with the transfer costing them €45 million. Details are being finalized for the move to occur next week. Gomes is expected to bid farewell to the Wolves fans this Sunday during their final home game of the season against Burnley. Although he recently missed out on the Brazil World Cup squad, his last appearance for the national team was over a year ago.
Atletico Madrid’s Midfield Conundrum
For some time, the midfield has been a point of concern for Diego Simeone. A central partnership of Rodrigo de Paul and Koke Resurreccion was their most stable for a period, despite its shortcomings. It was anticipated that Pablo Barrios and new signing Johnny Cardoso would take over this season. However, both players have been hampered by consistent injuries, leaving Koke as their standout midfielder once again.
The Atletico captain, now 34, is far from a long-term solution. Los Colchoneros are undoubtedly planning with Koke as a backup rather than a regular starter. Gomes, a ball-winning midfielder with the ability to drive forward, would likely compete for a spot with Cardoso if the transfer is completed.
