Following Atletico Madrid’s derby loss to Real Madrid, manager Diego Simeone chose not to attribute his team’s defeat to the refereeing. Despite the usual controversy surrounding the officiating – with Atletico disputing a penalty call and Real Madrid arguing against Fede Valverde’s red card – Simeone maintained his focus elsewhere.
Atletico had protested a potential penalty when Marcos Llorente was fouled by Dani Carvajal in the first half after taking a shot. Real Madrid had also expressed discontent regarding Fede Valverde’s red card. However, Simeone stated he was too distant from these incidents to provide an accurate evaluation.
Speaking to Marca, Simeone clarified, “I don’t believe that was the reason we didn’t win. We created good opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. We probably deserved a bit more from the game.”
He continued by emphasizing that the refereeing decisions didn’t “interfere with the game’s outcome.” Simeone stressed that his team “could have done much more,” specifically highlighting areas for improvement in defending against Real Madrid’s goals and enhancing their attacking presence. He acknowledged the quality of their opponents, stating, “We have opponents who play well, and they’ll punish you for any mistake you make.”
Simeone: ‘We could have controlled the game more’
When discussing his team’s potential to secure a victory, Simeone expressed regret over Real Madrid gaining control after scoring the opening goal. He elaborated, “We needed to control the game more, attack differently. We weren’t able to implement these strategies effectively during critical moments. I believe I’ve sufficiently explained my perspective on the match.”
Simeone pleased with Ademola Lookman performance
One bright spot for Atletico was the opening goal scored by Ademola Lookman, who linked up effectively with Giuliano Simeone to breach Real Madrid’s defense. Simeone praised Lookman’s progress: “He’s been growing, working very well, offering us different qualities. We’re supporting his defensive development, which he’s already committed to. He’s a young player with immense passion and a strong desire to learn. We hope he continues to deliver significant contributions, just as he did today.”
Lookman, acquired from Atalanta in January for €35m, has quickly made an impact, tallying five goals and four assists in 14 appearances. Despite Simeone’s earlier remarks about needing more from him defensively, Lookman’s offensive prowess has already endeared him to the Atletico faithful.
