Barcelona’s manager Hansi Flick certainly found the initial stages of their Champions League tie against Newcastle United challenging. The 1-1 draw in the first leg, combined with a similarly concerning opening period in the second, tested his side. Flick had noted earlier in the week that his team was working on dismantling Newcastle’s aggressive man-to-man press, a strategy that truly clicked into place during the second half.
Newcastle United immediately signaled their intent to make life difficult for Barcelona, putting pressure on their half and forcing goalkeeper Joan Garcia into action twice within the first five minutes. However, Barcelona found their breakthrough when Lamine Yamal expertly turned Lewis Hall in his own half, feeding Raphinha on the right. After a quick exchange with Fermin Lopez, Raphinha confidently slotted the ball home from inside the box to open the scoring.
Despite conceding, Newcastle’s morale remained high, and they continued to launch attacks down the flanks. Harvey Barnes, having already demonstrated his pace against Eric Garcia, broke free on the left and delivered a pass for Anthony Elanga, who ghosted in unmarked from the opposite wing to equalize past Joan Garcia. Barely four minutes after Barcelona’s opener, Marc Bernal nodded Raphinha’s clipped set-piece back across the six-yard box to restore Barcelona’s lead.

The back-and-forth continued, with numerous chances created by both sides. Before the half-hour mark, Eric Garcia was forced off due to a hamstring injury relapse, replaced by Ronald Araujo, who struggled to contain Barnes. A series of unfortunate events, including Lamine Yamal backheeling the ball to Newcastle in his own third, led to Barnes setting up Elanga once more, who tapped in from close range after slipping past Joao Cancelo, marking Newcastle’s second equalizer.
The final 15 minutes of the first half became a tense struggle for control. If Sandro Tonali and Joelinton could distribute the ball wide to Barnes, Newcastle would launch a dangerous counter-attack. Conversely, disrupting Newcastle’s play immediately turned Barcelona’s attention towards the opposition goal. Raphinha created a golden opportunity for Robert Lewandowski, but a heroic block from Dan Burn denied a third goal. Shortly after, Lamine Yamal evaded his marker, found Lewandowski, who quickly laid it off to Raphinha on the side of the box. The Brazilian’s shot was parried by Aaron Ramsdale, and both Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal incredibly missed open goals, with Yamal lofting the ball over from eight yards out.
Nevertheless, Barcelona managed to reclaim the lead before half-time. Another Lamine Yamal pass down the right flank found Fermin Lopez at the by-line. His cross towards the six-yard box was nearly met by Raphinha, who was tugged back by Kieran Trippier. This time, Lamine Yamal stepped up and calmly converted the penalty, beating Ramsdale to his right.
Barcelona Finds Their Stride in the Second Half
The second half began with Barcelona quickly finding answers to Newcastle’s intense pressing. With Raphinha, Lamine Yamal, and Lopez consistently interchanging positions, Barcelona began to release Lopez in behind the defense with much greater ease. Just eight minutes into the half, a swift two-pass move from Gerard Martin and Raphinha set Lopez clear, who raced forward and clinically finished into the corner, effectively breaking Newcastle’s stubborn defense.
After this goal, Barcelona pressed on the accelerator. In the 57th minute, Raphinha delivered a swirling corner to the back post, which Robert Lewandowski headed back across goal and into the net for only his third goal in eleven games, a strike that visibly boosted his confidence. Five minutes later, Lamine Yamal, once again operating in the number 10 position, skillfully turned away from his marker and delivered a perfect pass for Lewandowski, who peeled away from the middle and finished back across Ramsdale into the corner.
At this point, the tension, which had been palpable for 150 minutes of action, finally evaporated from the game. Newcastle’s suffocating press became non-existent, allowing Barcelona to revel in the newfound space. Barcelona’s own press intensified, leading to Jacob Ramsey inadvertently assisting Raphinha by gifting him the ball on the edge of the box. Raphinha, unopposed, controlled and finished calmly to make it seven. While the result was overwhelmingly positive for Barcelona, Flick will undoubtedly be concerned by Joan Garcia’s calf injury, which forced him to be replaced by Wojciech Szczesny.
Barcelona’s first-half performance was at times disjointed, vulnerable, and softer than Hansi Flick would have liked. However, the second half transformed into a masterclass of sharp movement, intelligent turns, and precise passing into their players’ paths. When Barcelona played like this, Newcastle simply could not compete. Although Flick will be aware that his side cannot afford to wait until the final quarter of a knockout tie to display such dominance, the rare sight of this “hurricane-like” Barcelona this season will likely bring him immense delight. They are now set to face either Atletico Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-final in April.
