Barcelona Can’t Afford Premier League Star This Summer

Barcelona is aiming to strengthen their forward line this summer by acquiring two new players. In addition to a striker to replace the anticipated departure of Robert Lewandowski, they are also seeking a new left winger. However, securing either of these signings presents a significant challenge, especially considering the club’s financial limitations, which also necessitate the signing of a center-back.

Sporting director Deco has identified potential targets. Among the left-wing options being considered is Anthony Gordon, the talented Newcastle United and England international. Gordon is viewed as a younger alternative to Raphinha and is reportedly preferred over current loan player Marcus Rashford.

Nevertheless, a move for Gordon this summer is expected to be exceptionally difficult for Barcelona. Given their plans to invest heavily in a new center-back and a striker, the substantial transfer fee demanded by Newcastle, reportedly at least €75 million, has priced Barcelona out of the race, according to Christian Falk.

“It’s plausible that Barcelona would be interested in signing Anthony Gordon. His agents are actively exploring opportunities across Europe, holding discussions with clubs like Chelsea and establishing contact with Liverpool and Arsenal. This outreach is permitted as Newcastle may need to generate funds this summer to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. Barcelona was presented with the player, but they cannot afford the transfer fee being discussed.”

Barcelona Needs to Consider More Affordable Left-Wing Options

The left wing is a position Barcelona must address this summer, particularly if Marcus Rashford does not remain at the club. However, with crucial investments planned for the center-back and striker roles, committing €75 million to Gordon is financially unfeasible. Barcelona should shift their focus from pursuing Gordon and instead concentrate on identifying more cost-effective alternatives, such as Ez Abde and Jan Virgili.
