Barcelona are in the market for a center-forward this summer. While their initial preference was reportedly for Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez, it now appears the Catalan giants have shifted their attention to another Atlético forward: Alexander Sørloth.
According to reports from Marca, Barcelona have expressed an interest in signing the imposing Norwegian. Sørloth has a notable scoring record against Barcelona and has performed well during his two seasons with Atlético. Barcelona have made a formal inquiry for the player. Matteo Moretto suggests that with Robert Lewandowski’s future uncertain, Barcelona are attracted to Sørloth’s similar physical attributes and his perceived ability to adapt quickly to Hansi Flick’s system.
Barcelona Seeking Cover Amidst Lewandowski Uncertainty
Barcelona’s original plan was to retain Robert Lewandowski for another season, offering him a one-year contract extension with a significant wage reduction and a backup role. However, the veteran Polish striker, who will turn 38 in August, is still weighing his options and is reportedly no longer prioritizing Barcelona’s offer. There’s a possibility he could depart at the end of the season, leaving Ferran Torres as the only recognized number nine.
Sørloth’s Impressive Record Against Barcelona
Barcelona are well aware of Sørloth’s capabilities, as the 30-year-old has consistently troubled them. In 15 appearances against the Catalan club, he has recorded seven goals and three assists. Sørloth has two years remaining on his Atlético contract, having scored 17 goals and provided an assist in 47 appearances, despite starting only 24 of those matches.
Starting Striker or Alternative Option?
With a move for Julián Álvarez seemingly out of reach, Barcelona have also been linked with Victor Osimhen. However, there have been fewer credible links to other players capable of filling the number nine role. Ferran Torres remains an alternative, but Barcelona have been discussing signing a high-profile name who could become their long-term solution. Sørloth would represent a lower-profile acquisition compared to stars like Álvarez or Osimhen.
