Barcelona’s current president, Rafael Yuste, and Atletico Madrid’s president, Enrique Cerezo, shared a pre-match dinner ahead of the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie. Yuste confirmed that Barcelona is carefully reviewing UEFA’s decision to dismiss their protest regarding a non-penalty call during the first leg.
The Catalan club was reportedly displeased when no punishment was given for a perceived handball by Marc Pubill in the second half of their 2-0 defeat to Atletico at Camp Nou. Barcelona subsequently lodged a complaint with UEFA, which was deemed ‘inadmissible’ by the governing body on Tuesday.
“Our legal department is examining the reasons why UEFA did not accept our claim, and we will proceed based on their findings,” Yuste stated.
Metropolitano Pitch Condition Not a Worry
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick was observed expressing concerns about the condition of the Metropolitano pitch during his team’s training session on Tuesday. Although the pitch was subsequently mowed later that evening, Barcelona has received assurances from UEFA regarding its playing status for the upcoming match.
Yuste, who is temporarily leading Barcelona until Joan Laporta officially begins his fourth term, conveyed confidence: “I am not worried because I know that UEFA officials have been with both teams, and I believe the pitch will be in perfect playing condition.”
Cerezo acknowledged that Atletico had extended an invitation to Laporta for the dinner, citing their “good relationship” and Laporta’s status as the president-elect. However, he appeared dismissive of any complaints from Barcelona, whether concerning the pitch or officiating.
“These are matters they have raised. UEFA has confirmed the pitch is acceptable, and I cannot add more. I believe some prefer long hair, and others prefer short hair,” Cerezo told Sport. “I saw it clearly myself, and as long as UEFA says so, that’s the end of it. You discuss so many things daily – the pitch, Pubill’s action… Come on, let’s have something new. To me, these complaints are utter nonsense.”
Julian Alvarez’s Future
In discussions common before matches between the two clubs, Cerezo was questioned about Julian Alvarez’s future amidst reported interest from Barcelona. His response remained consistent with previous statements, indicating to the Catalan publication that “I believe he will stay with us for a long time.”
