Barcelona has identified Alessandro Bastoni as their prime candidate for a central defender in the upcoming summer transfer window, and there is a high likelihood that the Inter Milan player could make his way to Spotify Camp Nou. Interestingly, Bastoni might not be the only Serie A defender on the Catalan giants’ radar for future acquisitions.
Beyond the need for a new centre-back, Barcelona is also exploring the possibility of bringing in another full-back. Should Joao Cancelo’s loan move not become permanent, the club would face a significant lack of depth, particularly at right-back, leaving Jules Kounde without a natural backup.
This is precisely where Marco Palestra comes into consideration. As reported by Nicolo Schira and corroborated by MD, Barcelona recently scouted the 21-year-old talent, who is currently on loan at Cagliari from Atalanta.
Palestra is an emerging talent in Italy, having earned his first two caps for the Azzurri during the recent international break. He operates primarily as a right-back but has also featured on the left flank during his burgeoning career, a versatility that significantly enhances his appeal to Barcelona.
Barcelona Anticipates Stiff Competition for Palestra
Should Barcelona decide to intensify their interest in Palestra, they are expected to face considerable competition from other major clubs across Europe. Liverpool has expressed keen interest, while Inter Milan is reportedly allocating €35 million for his transfer – a move that could potentially be financed by the Catalans if they proceed with signing Bastoni.
Barcelona’s well-known strategy of relying on young players makes Palestra a sensible target. Nevertheless, considering their immediate needs for a new centre-back and a striker, coupled with potential requirements for other attacking reinforcements, the club’s financial constraints might prevent them from meeting Atalanta’s asking price unless they secure at least one significant player sale.
