Bethesda Acknowledges Past DLC Pop-Up Issues, Promises Improved Starfield Expansion Integration

Initially, when players dove into Bethesda’s open-world RPGs, installing new downloadable content (DLC) would typically trigger a helpful notification upon loading a save, guiding them to new quests or items. However, re-experiencing these titles with their Game of the Year (GOTY) or Ultimate editions often proved to be a jarring affair. Players would frequently emerge from the game’s initial tutorial zones only to be inundated with a relentless barrage of pop-up messages.

Istvan Pely, credited for art direction on every Bethesda Fallout title and The Elder Scrolls series from Morrowind to Skyrim, recently shared with GamesRadar that the Game of the Year edition of Fallout 3 specifically highlighted the shortcomings of this approach to DLC integration.

Pely explained, “Over a decade ago, we realized a significant lesson from the Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition. We would develop DLCs, then package them into a GOTY edition, which would greet players with a flood of messages announcing that all DLCs were unlocked. We’ve certainly improved in this area since then.”

Now serving as art director for Starfield, which is set to receive its ‘Terran Armada’ story DLC next month, Pely affirmed Bethesda’s commitment to avoiding past errors with its new game’s expansions. He noted that “The inception of Terran Armada is far more organically integrated into the game world. Players will naturally encounter this content. Therefore, it’s quite plausible that you might begin the game, become aware of it, even be advised against tackling it immediately, yet remain free to attempt it.”

Starfield’s ‘Terran Armada’ DLC, alongside the ‘Free Lanes’ update designed to reduce loading screens, is slated for release on April 7. For those seeking the traditional experience of being overwhelmed by quest notifications, Fallout New Vegas Ultimate remains a prime example.
