Borja Iglesias’ Masterpiece Secures Celta Vigo’s European Ambitions Against Atletico Madrid

Celta Vigo took a significant stride towards securing a European football spot for the upcoming season with a hard-fought victory at the Metropolitano against Atletico Madrid. This marked only the third home defeat for Los Colchoneros in La Liga this season, a result that jeopardizes their hold on third place.

Early in the match, Atletico Madrid showed little sign of the disappointment from their recent Champions League exit. Marcos Llorente made impactful runs down the right flank, one of which led to a ricochet off a Celta defender and Antoine Griezmann, narrowly missing the target. Shortly after, an incisive pass from Alex Baena found Ademola Lookman on the left of the box, whose powerful shot struck the corner of the goal frame, all within the first 11 minutes.

Despite a series of half-chances for Atletico, Celta struggled to create any meaningful attacking sequences until the half-hour mark. Fer Lopez launched a long pass to Pablo Duran, who had a clear path to goal. However, Borja Iglesias, after creating space on the left of the box, sent his shot soaring over the top right corner. Marcos Llorente responded with a shot that narrowly missed the right post, but the perception of Atletico dominating Celta began to fade.

Celta’s most fluid attacking move of the game occurred five minutes into the second half. A well-placed pass to Borja Iglesias was followed by a return pass from Oscar Mingueza to Fer Lopez. The move culminated in a perfect lay-off in the D for Ilaix Moriba, but his finish lacked precision, going over the crossbar. Atletico mirrored this with an attacking threat less than two minutes later. A sweeping ball to the back post found Baena, and Alexander Sorloth’s backheel attempt necessitated the first significant save of the match, with Andrei Radu diving to his right to push it wide.

For the first time since the opening period, it appeared Atletico were regaining control, pushing Celta back towards their own penalty area. It was then that the Celta faithful, vocal in their corner, erupted when Borja Iglesias’ exquisite lob floated down and found the back of the net. The ball had been worked out to Iglesias on the left of the box by Williot Swedberg. With Jan Oblak and Robin Le Normand closing down angles, Iglesias executed a brilliant chip over them.

Following the goal, play largely reverted to Celta’s half, though genuine attacking football was scarce. Celta effectively disrupted Atletico’s rhythm in short bursts. When Atletico managed to string passes together, they posed a threat, as seen when Thiago Almada blazed a good opportunity over the bar from a Nahuel Molina cross. Youngster Miguel Llorente, introduced by Diego Simeone to inject urgency, fired narrowly wide of the far post from the left shortly after.

Atletico Madrid had relatively little at stake beyond solidifying third place against Villarreal. Despite Simeone’s declaration of “enormous motivation,” the irritated crowd and a somewhat tepid tempo made finding an equalizer seem like a monumental task. With Baena off the pitch for the final 20 minutes, much of Atletico’s attacking threat relied on crosses. Miguel Llorente’s header with two minutes remaining was the second occasion Radu was forced into an excellent save. Celta defended resolutely, appearing to believe that breaking down Atletico’s eight-man defense was an insurmountable challenge.

As the final whistle blew, the cheers of the Celta fans managed to drown out the Atletico anthem. While Simeone could point to statistics showing only two Celta shots compared to Atletico’s 17, highlighting “famous effectiveness” in the boxes, his team appeared laboured in their efforts. The same could not be said for Celta, whose commitment and speed seemed to increase as the match drew to a close. While not Celta’s most aesthetically pleasing performance, manager Claudio Giraldez will undoubtedly commend his players’ attitude.

Iglesias’ moment of sublime skill was the kind of composure Atletico lacked in front of goal, and it brings Celta within touching distance of European qualification. They remain in 6th place, just three points behind Real Betis before their match, and look forward to hosting Levante on Tuesday. Los Colchoneros face a trip to Osasuna, which may prove even more challenging. They are five points behind Villarreal before the Yellow Submarine play.
