Bornauw Joins Leeds United from Wolfsburg

Football News

Belgian defender Sebastiaan Bornauw has officially concluded his period at VfL Wolfsburg, having now finalized a transfer to Premier League club Leeds United FC. He has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the English side.

The 26-year-old central defender was present at Elland Road earlier today to complete the final details of the deal and sign the relevant documents. At Leeds, he will reunite with Lukas Nmecha, another player who departed Wolfsburg this season. VfL Wolfsburg will receive a fee of £5.1 million for Bornauw`s transfer, as his previous contract in Germany was valid until the summer of 2026.

Player`s First Comments

Speaking to the media through the club`s official press release issued today, Bornauw stated that joining a Premier League team and playing for a major club within both English and European football has long been a personal ambition.

He commented: “I am genuinely excited to be here; it is a truly fantastic club. In my opinion, the Premier League stands as the premier league globally. While the Bundesliga is undoubtedly a very strong competition too, I believe that as professional footballers, we always aim for the pinnacle, and for me, the Premier League represents that highest level.”

When asked to elaborate on his playing attributes and what he intends to bring to Leeds United, he described himself: “I would say I am quite a defensive player. I possess strength and enjoy engaging in duels, which I feel is a characteristic well-suited to the style of play in England.”

He further added regarding his offensive potential: “As a central defender, I also think I can pose a threat in the opponent`s penalty area – I have a preference for set pieces, particularly attacking ones. So, that`s how I would characterize my game.”

Farewell Message to Wolfsburg

Bornauw also shared a message on his social media channels concerning his departure from Wolfsburg. Translated from German, his post read:

After four years with VfL Wolfsburg, it is now time to close this chapter. I want to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who supported and accompanied me during this period – especially my teammates, the coaching staff, the entire staff, and the fans.

It was a tremendous honour to play for this club. I was able to achieve a great deal here, both in my physical development and personally, and I reflect on this time with significant appreciation. I wish the club and everyone involved all the very best for the future. Thank you so much for everything!
