The developers of Caves of Qud, a roguelike with deep systemic mechanics, have successfully ported the game to Nintendo Switch, despite it seeming an almost insurmountable task. The game, originally designed for PC with extensive keyboard bindings and demanding CPU resources, arrived on Switch in February 2026.
Qud co-founder, Brian Bucklew, admitted that the decision to port was not rational, but they were drawn to the challenge of solving an “impossible problem.” Adapting the game for gamepads and a portable console became a compelling endeavor.
The Switch port was made possible by a 2024 UI and control overhaul, which surprisingly made the game quite playable on the Steam Deck. Despite its complexity and abundance of information, clever button combinations and shortcuts simplified actions that typically require navigating through multiple menus.
Bucklew also aimed to disprove the notion that there is no market for systemic PC games on Switch. He believes that even a small fraction of Switch’s massive user base represents a significant market for indie studios. Caves of Qud’s success on Switch proved him right: the game reached the top five in “Physical + Digital” sales, outperforming most games sold on both cartridges and the eShop.
Interestingly, some design decisions that facilitated gamepad play were unintentional. Unlike older roguelikes with numerous keybindings, Qud’s developers focused on menu-driven interactions, which, though barely, allowed for gamepad control adaptation.
Now, the Freehold Games team is preparing for a new challenge: porting Caves of Qud to mobile phones, adapting the game for portrait mode and touch input. Thanks to previous optimizations for the Switch and the high performance of modern smartphones, performance issues are expected to be minimal. Bucklew is confident that their project will prove the existence of a market for complex RPGs on phones, a territory larger studios are currently hesitant to explore.
