Chelsea has identified Jamie Gittens as their primary transfer target for the current summer window. The Blues remain determined to secure his signing, even with fresh competition now emerging from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.
The club has already begun strengthening their attack, notably signing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million.
While speculation suggests another striker might arrive, Chelsea`s main focus appears to be acquiring a new left winger, particularly following Jadon Sancho`s return to Manchester United.
Malick Fofana of Olympique Lyon is another player linked with a move, but Gittens reportedly sits atop Chelsea`s list of desired signings. They have already held multiple discussions with Borussia Dortmund regarding a potential transfer.
Personal terms have reportedly been agreed with the 20-year-old winger, including a verbal commitment to a seven-year contract. The primary hurdle remaining is for the two clubs to settle on the transfer fee.
However, this negotiation is proving difficult due to a significant difference in the valuations of the player by Chelsea and Dortmund.
Dortmund has already rejected several bids from Chelsea. Their latest reported offer was £42 million, but Dortmund is reportedly demanding £50 million for the player.
Initially, Dortmund valued Gittens much higher, reportedly at £86 million, at a time when his market value was peaking. However, his performance statistics declined in the latter half of last season, leading to a decrease in his valuation.
Chelsea is hesitant to meet Dortmund`s current asking price, but BVB is reportedly under no pressure to sell quickly and appears content to wait, similar to Chelsea`s stance.
Gittens still has three years remaining on his contract with Dortmund, yet Chelsea remains optimistic that they can successfully negotiate an agreement with the German club.
Gittens is considered to have a playing profile comparable to Nico Williams of Athletic Club, another player previously linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
While other English clubs were previously linked with Gittens, they have since pursued alternative targets, seemingly leaving Chelsea as the primary suitor. This situation changed when Bayern Munich reportedly re-entered the race.
The interest from the German champions could complicate Chelsea`s acquisition efforts, but the London club remains resolute. They are reportedly pushing to finalize the transfer before the upcoming season commences.
