The 2026 Finalissima, which was scheduled to feature Spain and Argentina, has recently been cancelled. The prestigious event, originally slated for Qatar, required relocation due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Unfortunately, an agreement on a suitable new venue could not be reached, leading to its ultimate cancellation.
Initially, UEFA pointed fingers at the Argentine Football Association for the cancellation, alleging that they rejected all available venue options. However, CONMEBOL has now entered the fray, shifting the blame directly onto Spain.
As reported by Cadena SER, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez has unilaterally declared Argentina the winners of the 2026 Finalissima. He stated that Spain must forfeit the match because they “did not turn up” for the fixture. Dominguez explicitly said, “Argentina are two-time champions of the Finalissima. Spain did not show up.”
RFEF Chief Issues Response to Dominguez’s Declaration
These statements from Dominguez were made earlier in the week, allowing ample time for the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to formulate a response. Rafael Louzan, who heads the RFEF, shared his perspective on the matter during an interview with Cadena SER.
Louzan dismissed Dominguez’s declaration as a “joke,” though he tempered his comment with a lighthearted tone. He firmly stated, “Well, that’s a joke, isn’t it? Just kidding. Let it be clear, let it be very clear that Spain has put everything so that this Finalissima could be played. We have not set any conditions. And, therefore, the interest that Spain had in playing it is clearly demonstrated. If the others have not had it, I do not know… I think we’re going to play it at some point. I want to understand, but if not, we’ll see you at the World Cup.”
This contentious issue has undeniably created friction between the football federations of Spain and Argentina. Despite the current dispute, the Finalissima fixture is still anticipated to be played at some future point. Before then, the two football giants could potentially clash at this summer’s World Cup, where both are considered strong contenders for the title.
