The future of Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is currently uncertain as preparations for the upcoming 2024/25 Championship season begin. The former Bayern Munich coach has impressed during his tenure with the Owls in Yorkshire, navigating challenges and understandably attracting attention from other clubs.
Bundesliga Ambition Revealed
In a recent interview with a German newspaper, Danny Rohl openly expressed his desire to return to the Bundesliga, stating he wants to do so “as soon as possible.” When asked about becoming a head coach in the German top-flight, Rohl responded emphatically: “If it were up to me, as soon as possible.”
He highlighted the personal significance of the Bundesliga, having grown up with it, and emphasized his aspiration “to work at the highest level” and “compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.” Rohl feels he has “generated significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.” Regarding specific links to clubs like RB Leipzig, he remained guarded, simply saying, “I don’t want to say anything about that.” Rohl acknowledged the interest from clubs in both England and Germany as “validation of my work,” concluding that “we`ll see what happens in the summer.”
Middlesbrough Interest and Buyout Clause
Middlesbrough are reported to be admirers of the Sheffield Wednesday manager. Currently searching for a successor, the club has considered Rohl as a potential candidate to take charge. However, a significant obstacle is Rohl`s reported buyout clause in his Sheffield Wednesday contract.
This clause is understood to be around £5 million, which has also proven to be a stumbling block for other interested parties, such as Werder Bremen. It is suggested that this fee is too high for Middlesbrough, potentially leading them to prioritize spending on player recruitment instead of a new manager`s release clause, and thus look at alternative targets.
Leicester City Consideration
Following Russell Martin`s move to Rangers, Danny Rohl reportedly remains a candidate for a potential managerial vacancy at Leicester City. The future of current Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is uncertain after the Premier League season concluded; reports indicate he has yet to discuss his future with the club board.
While Van Nistelrooy spends time in the Netherlands, it remains unclear if he will be in charge for their Championship campaign. It has been suggested that Van Nistelrooy is expected to depart, with Danny Rohl among the names mentioned as a possible successor, alongside other candidates. Leicester have been slow to provide clarity on their managerial situation. However, the King Power Stadium could represent an attractive opportunity for Rohl, particularly if he harbors ambitions of managing in the Premier League in the near future.
