Diego Simeone Extends Atletico Madrid Tenure Until 2027

Football

Diego Simeone, currently navigating his 14th season as Atletico Madrid’s head coach, has reportedly agreed to continue his role. Speculation about his future had been rife, partly due to links with the Inter Milan managerial position (a move now ruled out for 2026) and the club’s new era under Apollo Sports Capital.

However, Diario AS confirms that Simeone will remain in charge. Recent discussions between the 55-year-old manager and the club’s hierarchy culminated in an agreement for him to lead the team until at least the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.

Despite a clause in his current contract that would allow him to depart at the end of the season without penalty, neither Simeone nor Atletico Madrid have any intention of activating it. Their mutual aim is to bring further success to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, with immediate focus on the ongoing Copa del Rey and Champions League campaigns.

Future Contract Negotiations Expected

The report further indicates that Atletico Madrid and Simeone are scheduled for another meeting at the end of the current season. These forthcoming discussions are expected to revolve around a potential contract renewal offer, especially since Simeone’s existing deal will have only 12 months remaining by the summer.

While Atletico Madrid has faced challenges in recent seasons when competing against powerhouse rivals like Barcelona and Real Madrid, Simeone is still widely considered the optimal choice for the coaching position. Although it’s inevitable that his long tenure will eventually conclude, the immediate focus is firmly on him guiding Atleti to a successful end to the current season.
