Don Goodman on Kieran McKenna Staying at Ipswich Town and Promotion Prospects

Football News

Following Keith Andrews` appointment as head coach at Brentford, Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman shared his perspective on Ipswich Town`s outlook for the upcoming season.

Ipswich Town faced some uncertainty this summer due to speculation that their highly-regarded manager, Kieran McKenna, might depart. McKenna was linked with the vacant managerial position at Brentford.

However, with Keith Andrews now confirmed in the Brentford role, it is expected to provide greater stability at Portman Road as Ipswich prepares for its return to the Championship following relegation from the Premier League.

Goodman Believes McKenna Staying is Key

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman suggests that Ipswich supporters who were anxious about McKenna potentially leaving can likely ease their concerns.

“I think the Brentford job was the really dangerous one that Ipswich fans needed to worry about. Obviously, Keith Andrews has got it now, so Ipswich fans can probably breathe easy that Kieran McKenna will remain.”

Goodman views McKenna`s decision to stay as a positive opportunity for both the manager and the club`s fanbase.

“I think it`s an excellent opportunity for him to go again. Knowing the Championship as he does, I think they have, without question, one of the strongest squads in the Championship and I would be expecting them to be challenging for automatic promotion once again.”

With Andrews now at Brentford, Goodman feels it`s difficult to identify a better current option for McKenna than remaining at Ipswich.

“It`s hard to see which other clubs that would be better than Ipswich Town that would be in for Kieran McKenna at this stage. I`ve said it in the past; I think he`s at the best place and I think he`ll be absolutely motivated to make it another brilliant season in the Championship for Ipswich.”

Brentford Opted for Andrews After Considering McKenna

Brentford did consider Kieran McKenna after Ipswich`s recent relegation from the Premier League. Reports indicated that Brentford believed the 39-year-old manager held aspirations for opportunities higher within the Premier League. Ultimately, they appointed Keith Andrews, their former set-piece coach.

The Brentford position was among the last vacant top jobs in the Premier League. With this role filled, the pressure on Ipswich fans is reduced, allowing McKenna to fully concentrate on preparing his team for a strong push to return to the top flight.
