Edin Terzic Remains Silent on Athletic Club Managerial Rumors

Football

Athletic Club initiated its search for a new head coach last week, following Ernesto Valverde’s announcement that he would depart once his contract concludes this season. While Andoni Iraola, the Bournemouth coach and a celebrated figure for Los Leones, was initially the leading candidate, recent reports indicate that President Jon Uriarte now prefers Edin Terzic.

Terzic, who has been unemployed since his departure from Borussia Dortmund shortly after their 2023-24 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid, is considered the prime candidate to succeed Valverde. Preliminary discussions have reportedly occurred with his agents.

According to reports from RTL (via Cadena SER), Terzic is reportedly receptive to the idea of managing Athletic. However, during a recent media interaction, he opted not to comment on the speculation.

“I have ceased commenting on rumors, regardless of their veracity. I haven’t done so previously, and I won’t do so going forward.”

Is Terzic the Optimal Choice for Athletic Club?

Many were surprised by Terzic’s emergence as the top contender for Athletic’s managerial position after Valverde, especially since Iraola appeared to be an ideal match. Nevertheless, the 43-year-old German demonstrated significant capability during his tenure at Dortmund, and a move to San Mamés, after a two-year hiatus from coaching, could be perfectly suited for him.

The progression of Athletic’s search for a new manager will be closely watched. Negotiations with Terzic are anticipated to continue over the next few weeks, with the aim of securing an agreement before the summer. Despite optimism about the German manager taking the helm next season, no final decision has been made yet.
