English clubs’ plea for bigger Champions League squads rejected after Spanish backlash

Football News

UEFA has turned down requests from English football clubs to expand Champions League squads to 28 players for the upcoming season. This decision follows significant opposition, primarily from Spanish clubs, with Atlético Madrid notably among those expressing reservations.

While Premier League clubs had actively advocated for a larger squad size, the discussion regarding increased squad capacities, which took place at a UEFA club competitions committee meeting last month, did not result in a formal proposal being put forward. Consequently, the matter will not be considered at the UEFA executive committee’s next meeting, scheduled for May 20th in Istanbul, just before the Europa League final.
