Cult online action RPG Marvel Heroes, after more than eight years offline, has player-run servers at last
The online action RPG Marvel Heroes, an MMO title, ceased operations in November 2017. Despite a challenging initial launch, its core concept – akin to 'Diablo' but allowing players to embody Marvel characters like Scarlet Witch – showed significant potential and improved considerably with subsequent updates. However, these efforts weren't sufficient to prevent its closure when Marvel severed its partnership with developer Gazillion Entertainment. Although originally scheduled to run until the end of 2017, the game was ultimately 'sunset' two months ahead of schedule, marking its apparent end.
That 'end' has now been overturned. Marvel Heroes has experienced a resurgence, thanks to a server emulator that has finally reached its 1.0 milestone. The inaugural player-run server, known as Project Tahiti, is now operational, with more expected to launch soon. Accessing the revived game involves reinstalling it (e.g., via Steam), creating an account on the Project Tahiti website, and launching it with a specific configuration parameter. This morning, I successfully joined a queue of over 1,700 players, a testament to the community's dedication.
While I eventually entered the game, my initial session was cut short by a server restart during the tutorial. Thankfully, a single-player option is also accessible. Players can download a server emulator from GitHub, follow the provided setup guide, and enjoy the game solo, avoiding potential lag or disconnections as the public servers stabilize.
To monitor the growing number of player-run servers, a dedicated Pastebin link is available. Additionally, players might require access to the Internet Archive's backup of the game's final build. It's truly gratifying to witness Marvel Heroes receive this second chance, as it consistently delivered an enjoyable and engaging experience.
