Premier League side Everton has identified Villarreal`s forward, Thierno Barry, as a key transfer target for the upcoming summer window.
The France U21 international joined the Spanish club, known as the Yellow Submarine, from Swiss side Basel ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The 22-year-old striker made an immediate impact in Castellon, netting 11 league goals. His scoring form contributed significantly to Villarreal securing a UEFA Champions League qualification spot by finishing fifth in the La Liga standings.
Last season, only Ayoze Perez scored more goals for Marcelino`s team in the league (19). Barry`s strong performances are expected to attract transfer bids next month.
Previously, Chelsea had shown interest in Barry, partly fostered by the clubs` relationship following the transfer of Nicolas Jackson. Barry`s current contract includes a release clause set at €40 million.
Everton`s Pursuit of Thierno Barry
Transfer expert Matteo Moretto has indicated that Everton, nicknamed the Toffees, is prepared to activate Barry`s release clause as part of an ambitious move to bring him to Merseyside.
The English club is looking to reinforce its attacking options in the coming weeks, particularly as Dominic Calvert-Lewin`s contract is set to expire at the end of June, potentially leading to his departure.
In the 2024/25 season, Iliman Ndiaye finished as Everton`s top scorer with nine Premier League goals, highlighting the club`s desire to add more attacking firepower.
Potential Role for Barry at Everton
With the possibility of Calvert-Lewin leaving, the club needs a new striking option as they prepare for a new era at the Bramley Moore Stadium.
At Villarreal during the 2024/25 campaign, Barry frequently played as part of a two-man attack, often paired with either Ayoze Perez or Yeremy Pino.
Reports, including one from The Times, suggest Everton is ready to submit a formal bid by activating the player`s release clause.
While the prospect of playing in the Premier League is appealing, Villarreal`s achievement of Champions League football means Barry may not be in a hurry to leave Spain`s east coast just yet.
