Florentino Perez: A Critique of His Leadership and Public Statements

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez, typically known for his reserved public persona unlike more boisterous figures in Spanish football, recently broke his silence with a series of public statements that have drawn significant criticism. These pronouncements, rather than clarifying issues, have instead raised concerns about his leadership and social views.

Perez’s call for presidential elections, framed in a way that highlights the prohibitive financial barriers to candidacy, suggests a lack of genuine democratic process within the club. This aspect, though controversial, was overshadowed by subsequent remarks.

His personal financial success, derived from his construction company ACS which continues to secure lucrative government contracts, appears to have influenced his detached approach to the club’s performance. This wealth seems to position the club as just one of many financial ventures rather than a primary focus.

Instead of addressing the club’s core issues and taking accountability, Perez adopted a victim stance. He accused the media of being against him and repeatedly brought up the Negreira case, a tactic often employed by Real Madrid. More disturbingly, his personal attacks extended to journalists, including a notably misogynistic comment directed at a female journalist from ABC, questioning her knowledge of football.

Resorting to misogyny in 2026 is unacceptable. Coincidentally, the director of ABC was changed shortly after this incident, though any direct link remains speculative. Perez has historically been perceived as a stabilizing force at the club, but recent events, including the struggles of coaching staff like Alvaro Arbeloa and the departure of Xabi Alonso, indicate underlying dressing room issues that remain unaddressed.

Despite the high-profile arrival of Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid’s season has been disappointing. Instead of fostering self-criticism, Perez lashed out, targeting various individuals and even making disparaging remarks about South American accents. His recent public appearance has been likened to that of Donald Trump, characterized by a combative and deflection-oriented approach.

Perez’s intention was to shift media focus away from the club’s internal turmoil. While such tactics have worked in the past, his aggressive and widespread attacks this time failed to achieve the desired effect. Barcelona quickly responded to the accusations regarding the Negreira case, and it’s expected that Joan Laporta will leverage this situation for political gain. Following widespread criticism, Perez continued his discourse, choosing to speak with Josep Pedrerol on El Chiringuito, a platform seemingly aligned with his current level of public engagement.
