‘Antonio Rudiger is an example for young players’ – Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa
Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa has come to the defense of Antonio Rudiger, addressing recent criticism of the player's style and the ongoing uncertainty surrounding his contract. The experienced German defender's current deal expires this summer, and he is reportedly seeking a one-year extension at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Ahead of the Madrid derby, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone lauded Arbeloa and his contributions to Real Madrid. Arbeloa, a former Castilla coach, reciprocated the praise for his counterpart. When questioned about Simeone's characterization of Atletico as 'the people’s team' and what that implied for Real Madrid, Arbeloa responded:
“No… yes… well, that sounds great to me,” Arbeloa said with a smile, as reported by Diario AS. “I’m focused on my team. It’s a privilege to compete against managers like Diego Simeone, who has consistently showcased his quality and talent at Atletico Madrid for many years. The heights he’s reached with them, the remarkable consistency he's upheld, and the stature he’s rebuilt for Atletico Madrid…”
“It’s a privilege because he is the type of coach who pushes you to your limits, demanding your absolute best and forcing you to meticulously consider every aspect of a match. So, I reiterate: it’s an honor to face off against the world’s top coaches.”
‘Rudiger is an example for young players’
Antonio Rudiger was another significant topic during the press conference. The 33-year-old has faced recent backlash, not only for an incident involving Getafe’s Diego Rico where he kneed him in the head, but also for his subsequent remark that Rico wouldn't have recovered if he had truly intended to cause injury. As reports suggest Real Madrid is close to offering him a new contract, Arbeloa was questioned about Rudiger's future.
“I prefer not to delve into these contractual matters; I have immense respect for both the club and the player, and it's up to them to reach an agreement,” Arbeloa stated. “However, if you ask me personally… I’d gladly commission a statue of Rüdiger for my garden. He is a player who, from my very first day here, has consistently made himself available to the coaching staff. I vividly recall him telling me, ‘Mister, I’ll be here in March; when the challenging moments arrive, I’ll be prepared.’ And he has absolutely delivered on that promise.”
“It’s fortunate that the treatment he received from Niko (Mihic) in London yielded such positive results. He embodies the ideal role model for all aspiring young players. Furthermore, I sincerely hope that Real Madrid fans recognize how fortunate we are to have him at this club. They should always be thankful for his unwavering effort, distinct personality, the strong character he infuses into the team, and his undeniable talent as a player. (He paused before concluding) I can only express truly remarkable things about Antonio Rüdiger.”
‘His influence goes beyond the pitch’ – Arbeloa on Carvajal
Dani Carvajal is another seasoned player facing an uncertain future, with his contract also expiring this summer. This week's notable development was his exclusion from Luis de la Fuente’s final Spain squad ahead of the World Cup.
“My focus is entirely on Real Madrid, and that guided my decision to play Carvajal, for instance, against Elche, where he completed 90 minutes. I believe this will benefit him greatly, helping him regain his rhythm and continue contributing to our team, much like he did in the matches against Manchester City. He is fully available.”
“As ever, he is a player whose impact extends significantly beyond his on-pitch contributions, though those contributions are undeniably crucial. Ultimately, that's how footballers desire to help. However, the weight of his messages in the dressing room is immense; I believe he provides substantial support to his teammates. And that’s precisely what we require, isn't it? A leader. To me, a true leader commands respect and guidance both on and off the field. You are either a leader in all aspects, or you are not a leader at all.”
De la Fuente opted for Pedro Porro and Marcos Llorente as his right-back choices, overlooking Carvajal, who has seen limited regular play since recovering from a knee injury in January. However, the Spain manager indicated that Carvajal still has an opportunity to secure a spot in the World Cup squad.
