Argentina Sets Sights on Sevilla's Rising Star Oso, Sparks Dual-Nationality Battle
Argentina's national team manager, Lionel Scaloni, has officially acknowledged their keen interest in the promising development of Sevilla's winger, Joaquin Martinez Gauna, known by his moniker "Oso." The 22-year-old has been making significant waves in the 2026 season, quickly capturing the attention of two of international football's elite sides.
Originating from Sevilla's youth academy, Oso is naturally a left-back, but has been effectively deployed as a left winger by former manager Matias Almeyda until his recent departure. He has featured in 16 matches for Los Nervionenses, with seven starts in the league this season. His contributions include one goal and three assists, notably playing a part in both of Sevilla's goals during a 5-2 loss to Barcelona earlier this month. Just two weeks prior, his crucial assist secured a vital point against Real Betis in the passionate Seville derby, performances that truly highlighted his talent.
Lionel Scaloni Monitors Oso's Progress
Born in Spain to Argentine parents, Oso holds dual nationality, making him eligible for both nations. On Monday, Scaloni confirmed to Diario AS that Oso is indeed an option for the Albiceleste.
"We have closely observed several of Oso's matches, and he has consistently performed at a high level. He is included on a list of players we are actively monitoring. He is eligible for selection with Argentina," Scaloni stated.
So far, Spain's manager, Luis de la Fuente, has not commented on Oso's international future. It's also worth noting that Oso has yet to receive a call-up to any youth ranks for either Spain or Argentina.
Sevilla's Contract Concerns
Beyond his international allegiance, Sevilla faces an urgent task to secure Oso's long-term club future. While his current contract extends until 2027, failure to agree on a new deal before the summer transfer window could severely weaken Los Nervionenses' bargaining position. Oso is anticipated to be a pivotal player in Sevilla's crucial battle for La Liga survival in the season's closing weeks.
