Athletic Club Manager Search: Edin Terzic Overtakes Andoni Iraola

The managerial position at Bilbao's Athletic Club is distinctive, and for the first time in seven years, it could be filled by a non-Spanish coach. Following Ernesto Valverde's announcement of his departure from Los Leones at the season's end, the club is actively searching for his successor.

Valverde clarified last weekend that this decision was made some time ago, marking the conclusion of his third tenure at Athletic and a four-year spell in charge. Initially, his former player, Andoni Iraola, was widely considered the frontrunner for the role at San Mamés.

Edin Terzic Emerges as Top Contender

However, it now appears that former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic has moved into pole position. According to Sky Sport DE (via Marca), this aligns with Athletic President Jon Uriarte's vision, and Terzic is reportedly very receptive to the idea of taking the job. Nonetheless, with club elections scheduled for the summer, it remains uncertain whether Uriarte will be the one to finalize the appointment. Reports suggest that talks with Terzic are already advanced.

Iraola and Perez Still in the Mix

Despite Terzic's rise, Iraola undoubtedly remains a significant candidate at San Mamés. While Terzic's name surfaced before Valverde's departure was public, Iraola possesses a deep-rooted connection to Athletic, with many anticipating his eventual return to the dugout. However, Iraola typically defers his decision on future plans until the end of the season, a factor that might prompt Athletic to seek a candidate willing to commit sooner.

Another popular choice for the role is Rayo Vallecano's manager, Inigo Perez, who previously served as Iraola's assistant. Like Iraola, Perez's contract concludes this summer, and his performance in Vallecas has garnered considerable praise.
