Atletico Madrid Sporting Director in Italy to negotiate €40m deal for midfielder
Atletico Madrid's Sporting Director, Mateu Alemany, is already deeply involved in transfer activities, signaling what is expected to be a dynamic summer at the Metropolitano. This transfer window marks Alemany's first full summer at the helm for Los Colchoneros.
Alemany had a busy January, overseeing four player departures that generated approximately €60 million, while also bringing in Ademola Lookman, Rodrigo Mendoza, and Obed Vargas for a similar expenditure. He has now turned his attention to summer targets. With Antoine Griezmann confirming his departure from the club this summer, Kang-In Lee is considered a primary target to fill the void, alongside Atalanta midfielder Ederson dos Santos.
Alemany in Italy for Ederson Negotiations
According to Marca, Alemany recently traveled to Italy to meet with Atalanta President Antonio Percassi, with the aim of negotiating a transfer for Ederson. Atletico Madrid has reportedly made an offer of €35 million, with an additional €5 million in variables, bringing the total potential deal to €40 million. However, the Italian club is currently demanding €50 million for the Brazilian midfielder. Atletico believes that Ederson's contract, which runs until 2027, provides leverage to potentially lower the asking price. His projected annual salary is estimated to be between €4-5 million.
Atletico Madrid Eager to Finalize Deal
A key factor that could drive up Ederson's price is the rumored interest from Premier League clubs, with Arsenal reportedly among them. To preempt a potential bidding war with English teams, Alemany is keen to finalize the agreement well in advance of the summer transfer window's official opening.
If signed, Ederson would likely compete for a central midfield spot. Johnny Cardoso has established himself in 2026, partnering with Koke Resurreccion, especially following injuries to Pablo Barrios. While Barrios is anticipated to be a long-term fixture in Diego Simeone’s midfield, the coach typically operates with a central midfield pairing rather than a trio.
