Barcelona Considers Montjuïc Return for 2027 Displacement

Barcelona made their return to the Spotify Camp Nou in November, marking a highly successful period for the club. Under Hansi Flick, the team has maintained an unbeaten home record since their comeback, a run they are eager to continue.

The club recently obtained a license to increase the stadium's capacity to 62,000, with plans for it to eventually accommodate nearly 100,000 spectators once the Spotify Camp Nou renovations are fully completed. However, Barcelona is aware that a further temporary relocation will be necessary, most likely in 2027.

By April 2027, Barcelona aims to have all three tiers of the stadium built. Following this construction phase, the team will need to play all their matches away from home to facilitate the installation of the roof. This process is expected to take four months, meaning Barcelona will be displaced from Spotify Camp Nou for several weeks at the beginning of the 2027-28 season.

Club president Joan Laporta, recently re-elected, has proposed using the Estadi Johan Cruyff for these temporary fixtures. There are plans to upgrade this venue to meet La Liga regulations. However, its limited capacity of 18,000 would lead to a significant reduction in matchday revenue.

Alternatively, Barcelona could opt to return to the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Montjuïc, which served as their temporary home from the start of the 2023-24 season until their Camp Nou comeback last November. Given its larger capacity, allowing more fans to attend, reports suggest that club officials are seriously considering Montjuïc as the preferred option.

Discussions with City Council Expected Regarding Montjuïc

While a final decision has yet to be made, club officials are anticipated to engage with the Barcelona City Council about a potential return to the Estadi Olímpic. Although its location might not be ideal for all supporters, for the club, it presents a more financially viable option compared to the Estadi Johan Cruyff.
