Barcelona Eyes Cheaper Rashford Alternatives: Schjelderup, Munoz, Virgili Emerge
Barcelona is reportedly reconsidering its €30 million buy option for Marcus Rashford this summer. While the move seemed certain a couple of months ago, Rashford's two-month goal drought for the Catalan side has prompted a re-evaluation.
The Blaugrana are now believed to be seeking younger and more cost-effective attacking alternatives. Several names have surfaced, including newly capped Spain international Victor Munoz, Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup, and former La Masia talent Jan Virgili.
Benfica Open to Schjelderup Sale
According to Portuguese outlet Jornal Record, Barcelona may receive the green light to pursue Andreas Schjelderup this summer. Benfica President Rui Costa has reportedly identified the Norwegian winger as a player the club is willing to sell. Furthermore, Schjelderup is said to have no intention of extending his current contract, which expires in 2028.
Barcelona has been tracking Schjelderup for the past year and maintains a strong relationship with his agent, Rafaela Pimenta. However, given his age and potential, it remains unclear how much cheaper his transfer fee would be compared to Rashford's.
Doubts Persist Over Jan Virgili Signing
Re-signing Jan Virgili, who joined RCD Mallorca last season, could present the most economical option. Barcelona holds a 40% sell-on clause for Virgili, whose release clause is set at €30 million. This arrangement could allow the Blaugrana to bring him back for €18 million.
While Virgili's debut campaign in La Liga has reportedly impressed some at Barcelona, his inconsistency raises concerns among others regarding his suitability as a primary alternative. Virgili has contributed six assists this season but has yet to score. Considering that a key motivation behind targeting Rashford was his goal-scoring ability, Virgili's current output presents a drawback.
In contrast, Schjelderup boasts seven goals and four assists in 36 appearances this season, while Munoz has registered six goals and five assists in 31 outings, aligning more closely with Barcelona's desired offensive contributions.
