Barcelona Manager Hansi Flick Content with Newcastle Draw, Prioritizes Pedri's Fitness

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed satisfaction with his team's 1-1 draw against Newcastle United at St. James' Park on Tuesday night. Lamine Yamal secured the equalizer in the dying moments of the match, allowing the Blaugrana to return to Camp Nou with the score level, despite Newcastle dominating large parts of the game.

Despite the outcome, it was widely acknowledged that Newcastle had performed better on the night, with Barcelona appearing fatigued towards the end. Flick, however, vowed to present a "different Barcelona" in the upcoming second leg.

Flick attributed the team's struggles to numerous prior fixtures and returning injured players like Marc Bernal and Pedri, who are coming off periods of inactivity. He admitted that improvement was necessary but highlighted the positive aspect of the result, describing the late equalizer after being a goal down as "fantastic."

"We'll see a different Barça in the return leg," he reiterated to Movistar+, as reported by MD.

Flick's Frustration: "We Lost the Ball Too Many Times"

Flick's primary concern revolved around Barcelona's performance in possession, feeling they frequently ceded control to Newcastle. Nonetheless, he was pleased with their defensive display.

"We struggled with the ball, losing possession too frequently, which is precisely what Newcastle thrives on. We knew they are very quick in transition," Flick explained. "It wasn't easy, but I'm very satisfied with my team, particularly our defensive efforts; we defended exceptionally well on the pitch. Our two centre-backs did an outstanding job."

He acknowledged potential fatigue, stating, "We might have been tired, but we played a very intense match given this atmosphere and this team. I'm very happy and appreciate what I saw defensively, but we absolutely need to improve our ball retention. If someone had offered me a 1-1 draw beforehand, I would have gladly accepted it."

Ronald Araujo Deployed at Right-Back

Eric Garcia was initially expected to start at right-back, but muscle discomfort saw him benched. Instead of moving Joao Cancelo to right-back and Gerard Martin to left-back, their more natural positions with Ronald Araujo in central defence, Araujo directly replaced Garcia in a straight swap.

Flick elaborated on the decision: "He [Araujo] did his job. We aimed to minimize positional changes; it was clear we wanted Cubarsi and Gerard as our centre-backs. I asked Ronald if he could play at full-back, and he had a good game. Towards the end, he was fatigued from so much running and didn't recover optimally, but we had players in position to cover."

Xavi Espart made his debut, replacing Araujo who suffered from cramps in the final moments. Flick dismissed excuses, emphasizing team depth: "There are no excuses; we had sufficient players available, and you could even see, when Xavi came on, that he performed very well. That's what I want to see, and I'm happy about it."

The physical condition of Barcelona players was a key topic post-match, with Pedri, Marc Bernal, and Araujo all appearing exhausted and withdrawn due to struggles. Flick stressed the importance of recovery: "Right now, we need to rest; the players' priority is to recuperate and prepare thoroughly for Sunday's match. We'll have several days to prepare, there won't be any extended rest, but that's standard. When competing at this level in the Champions League and La Liga, playing every two or three days is normal, and we must adapt and manage these periods effectively."

Pedri, who was arguably Barcelona's standout performer, was substituted with 20 minutes remaining.

Flick explained the decision: "We have to meticulously manage his playing time; with Pedri, we must be very cautious. He's sustained two injuries this season and has just returned from the latest one. Naturally, everyone wants him on the pitch because he's the player who dictates play."

Barcelona is set to host Sevilla on Sunday night, followed by the decisive second-leg clash against Newcastle at Camp Nou the following Wednesday.
