Barcelona Midfielder Marc Bernal Absolves Hansi Flick of Injury Blame
Hansi Flick's future as Barcelona manager has been a subject of intense speculation recently. Club president Joan Laporta has confirmed plans to offer the German coach a contract extension in the coming months, aiming to secure his services for at least another year beyond his current deal, which is set to expire in 2027.
Among those keen for Flick to remain is Marc Bernal, a player who has thrived under the coach's trust. According to Sport, the teenage midfielder recently discussed his manager's approach, particularly highlighting his unwavering support during Bernal's challenging recovery from an ACL injury.
"Hansi is a very approachable individual," Bernal commented. "As a player, you truly value a coach who allows you to express yourself freely. During my injury, I felt he provided immense support and offered valuable advice. He constantly reminded me to be patient, assuring me that success would come eventually, which significantly eased my mind."
Bernal Absolves Flick of ACL Injury Blame
Bernal recounted receiving a book as a thoughtful gift from Flick, remembering "reading it when I was in the hospital" and acknowledging that "the truth is that reading helped me a lot." He also unequivocally cleared the Barcelona head coach of any responsibility for his unfortunate ACL tear, which he sustained against Rayo Vallecano at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
The midfielder asserted, "He was not at all to blame. That day, I recall telling him I was fine and could continue. These are uncontrollable incidents that occur in football and other sports; you simply have to accept them."
Bernal Pays Tribute to Laporta
Bernal also shared his thoughts on club president Joan Laporta, who is set to commence his fourth term in early July. While declining to reveal if he voted for Laporta in the recent election, Bernal fondly remembered the exceptional treatment he received from the 63-year-old following his ACL injury.
He stated, "When I was injured and in the hospital, they offered me a contract, which was a huge gesture of support from the club. They handled everything admirably. At that critical time, Laporta personally assisted and supported me, and I will be grateful to him for that my entire life."
