Barcelona's Joao Cancelo Plans Face Al-Hilal Hurdle

Barcelona's winter loan acquisition of Joao Cancelo from Al-Hilal initially raised eyebrows, but the Portuguese veteran has since turned heads with his stellar performances, making a strong case for a permanent stay at the club.

This marks Cancelo's second loan spell with Barcelona, joining in January until the season's end, 18 months after his initial stint concluded. Fortuitous injuries to key defenders Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde thrust Cancelo into a more central role than anticipated, where he has excelled, particularly at left-back filling in for Balde.

Barcelona Aims to Secure Cancelo Permanently This Summer

Consequently, reports indicate Barcelona's strong desire to retain Cancelo beyond his current loan agreement this summer. The 31-year-old is reportedly eager to cement his place back in elite European football. His exceptional form and valuable versatility are highly prized by the Catalan giants, with manager Hansi Flick reportedly giving his approval for a permanent transfer.

Al-Hilal's Demands Pose Significant Obstacle

However, the feasibility of the Blaugrana securing Cancelo on agreeable terms remains uncertain. While Barcelona has indicated a willingness to sign him permanently, their preference is a free transfer. This scenario would necessitate Cancelo negotiating an early termination of his contract with Al-Hilal. Yet, Spanish outlet MD reports that the Saudi club is seeking a €15 million fee for Cancelo this summer. Given Barcelona's existing plan to request a significant pay cut from Cancelo to facilitate the transfer, it appears highly improbable that he could also cover the entire transfer fee himself.

Al-Hilal's Stance: A Negotiation Tactic?

Nevertheless, this demand from Al-Hilal could merely be a negotiating ploy. Cancelo appears to be outside their future plans, and with only one year remaining on his contract and entering his thirties, his market value for them is diminishing. Should Al-Hilal insist on keeping him, particularly given Cancelo’s substantial wages, it’s improbable they would secure a favorable transfer deal this summer.
