Diego Simeone Praises Alvaro Arbeloa Ahead of Madrid Derby: 'He Has That Something Extra'
Ahead of Sunday's Madrid derby at the Bernabeu, Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone spoke highly of his Real Madrid counterpart, Alvaro Arbeloa. This upcoming clash marks Arbeloa's debut derby as a senior manager and the first time these two will face each other from the dugout, while it will be Simeone's 50th derby.
In an interview with Diario AS prior to the match, Simeone addressed Arbeloa's influence on Real Madrid since he succeeded Xabi Alonso in January.
"He's doing an excellent job; the outcomes clearly demonstrate that," Simeone stated. "There's a genuine rapport with the players, which is evident. Beyond the technical skills we coaches possess, there's an undeniable 'something extra' at play. You can observe a collective grasp of the coach's demands and objectives."
Perceived Changes in Real Madrid Under Arbeloa
When questioned about specific differences he observed in Arbeloa's Real Madrid, beyond the player connection, Simeone responded:
"You probably perceive it more clearly than we do," Simeone remarked. "They maintain a consistent approach because the core players remain the same. They are performing effectively as a unit, particularly in their Champions League outings against Benfica and Manchester City. This consistent pattern is what they'll continue to employ as Real Madrid, true to form, pursues victory in every competition."
Simeone on Julian Alvarez's Form: "Everyone Has Their Ups and Downs"
For Atlético, a significant positive from their match against Tottenham Hotspur was Julian Alvarez's return to top form in London, marked by a superb opening goal.
"He is an individual, and like all of us, he experiences fluctuations in form," Simeone commented. "In recent games, we've witnessed him return to the performance level we know he's capable of. This is precisely why, when his form dipped, we pushed for him to regain this standard. We understand that the path forward is rarely linear, always presenting twists and turns. And you're aware of my perspective when faced with such challenges."
Atletico Madrid's Potential Rotation for the Derby
Earlier this week, there were suggestions that Atletico might rotate their starting lineup, given their demanding Champions League fixture schedule.
"I haven't decided yet," he stated. "We are still determining our approach, specifically whether to continue with the rotation strategy we've typically employed when Champions League matches are followed by league fixtures. Every player is incredibly keen to participate, which complicates my selection process."
The stakes are considerably higher for Real Madrid, who are still in the title race, compared to Atletico, who are out of contention for the league trophy but virtually guaranteed a Champions League spot. Heading into the weekend, Los Blancos trail Barcelona by four points. Atletico will be without Jan Oblak, Marc Pubill, Pablo Barrios, and Rodrigo Mendoza due to injury.
