Fede Valverde Addresses Mbappe's Treatment and Real Madrid's Challenge Against Manchester City
Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde recently shared his perspective, stating he would not feel the need to leave Madrid to receive medical treatment or seek a second opinion for injuries. This stance contrasts with star striker Kylian Mbappe, who recently returned to the Spanish capital after a week spent in his native Paris. One of the reasons for Mbappe’s trip was to consult specialists regarding his ongoing knee problems, but the duration of his stay has attracted criticism from local media.
As Los Blancos prepare to face Manchester City in the Champions League Round of 16, they find themselves in the underdog position, having experienced a challenging period in La Liga and a somewhat inconsistent European campaign this season. Valverde was asked whether it was time for the players to demonstrate their commitment.
"Everyone must contribute," Valverde affirmed. "From the very first player to the last; and from every member of the coaching staff. We are all giving our utmost to improve our performance and ensure our fans are proud of us. We are united, pulling in the same direction, and working with absolute dedication."
The first leg of the fixture against Pep Guardiola’s side will be held at the Santiago Bernabeu, where City previously secured a 2-1 victory during the tournament's group phase. Valverde expressed his team’s eagerness for the upcoming encounter.
"We approach this with immense enthusiasm and determination," he explained. "Last time at the Bernabeu, we performed strongly until they made a comeback and won, subsequently dominating the game. However, we've put in significant work and each of us understands our specific responsibilities. This year, we haven't always experienced the collective defensive effort required from all eleven players to be prepared for whatever the opponent throws at us. Now, we are in good form and highly focused. These types of matches are demanding, and we are determined to be mentally and physically ready."
Valverde on Mbappe's Medical Choice
The Uruguayan midfielder was also questioned about whether he would consider returning to Montevideo in a situation similar to Mbappe’s.
"I have everything I need right here," Valverde responded confidently. "This is the world's best club, and the personnel here are exceptional. I trust everyone involved. I entrust my body to our physiotherapists and respect their expert opinions. I am completely at ease and solely focused on the upcoming match against City. Nothing else will divert our attention. I anticipate a fantastic night."
'Always Adapting' – Valverde on His Midfield Role
Earlier this season, Valverde was reportedly hoping to be deployed as a defensive midfielder. However, after initial tactical experiments, he has frequently found himself playing at right-back or on the right side of midfield. When asked if he expected more involvement in the team’s build-up play this season, he emphasized his adaptability.
"I always strive to adapt to the ideas the coach or the coaching staff wants," he stated. "I've played in numerous positions, not always in midfield, but my aim is always to contribute and give my best. The manager wants me to cover ground, control the ball, and link up with the full-back or winger; sometimes I need to play with more freedom, score goals, or provide assists… I always try to adjust. For me, simply being in the starting eleven is paramount."
Thiago Pitarch is one of the younger players who has recently joined Valverde in midfield, earning praise for his commitment and attitude on the pitch.
"I am delighted that young talents are receiving opportunities," Valverde remarked. "They are working incredibly hard… they run so much! It’s wonderful to see them bring such enthusiasm and joy. Thiago is playing well, but I want to emphasize the importance of them being good people off the field as well."
Real Madrid is scheduled to host Manchester City on Wednesday night at 21:00 CEST at the Santiago Bernabeu, with the return leg set for next Tuesday.
