Fede Valverde: Vinicius Junior Offered Me Manchester City Penalty
Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde delivered a standout performance recently, scoring his first career hat-trick against Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Remarkably, his memorable night could have been even more significant. Valverde disclosed in an interview with TNT Sports Brazil that Vinicius Junior, who earned a second-half penalty, offered him the opportunity to take the spot-kick.
Valverde recounted, "Yes, yes, he asked me (if I wanted to take the penalty). Vinicius is an incredibly important player for us; a true legend at the club, and a great friend. However, I told him to take it himself – a sentiment many of my teammates shared."
Valverde Reflects on Vinicius' Missed Penalty
Vinicius' subsequent penalty attempt was saved by Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, a moment that could significantly influence the outcome of the tie. While Valverde expressed regret over the miss, he praised his Real Madrid teammate's resilient response for the remainder of the match.
"These things can happen in football," Valverde acknowledged. "It's true that the miss remains a minor setback from the game. Had he converted it, it would have culminated in an absolutely incredible night for him. We're left with that slight regret, but it's simply part of the game."
He continued, "A penalty can either be scored or missed. The crucial aspect is that he reacted to that penalty with immense drive, continuing to run and push forward. The unwavering support from the fans for him truly fosters the strong bond between players and supporters, which I believe will bring us much joy."
Real Madrid will undoubtedly be hoping that Vinicius' penalty miss doesn't prove decisive. It will fall to Vinicius, Valverde, and the rest of Carlo Ancelotti's squad to ensure this isn't the case, as they aim to secure their place in the Champions League quarter-finals next week.
