Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has outlined his tactical preparations for the upcoming Champions League return leg against Newcastle United, revealing that Tuesday's training session was dedicated to dismantling their opponent's aggressive pressing strategy. The first leg at St. James' Park concluded in a 1-1 draw, with Barcelona securing a crucial equalizer via a Lamine Yamal penalty in the dying moments of the game.

Following the initial encounter, Flick conceded that the favorable result was the silver lining, acknowledging his side appeared fatigued and outmatched on English soil. He noted, "They pressed high up the pitch and defended very well in the final third. It will be a tough game. They are physically strong and quick in transition. We have to play a perfect game, and that’s what we’ll try to do."

Countering Newcastle United's Pressing Tactics

In the first leg, Newcastle effectively disrupted Barcelona's rhythm, making it challenging for them to advance the ball up the pitch through tight man-marking. Flick's team visibly struggled to find solutions to this intense pressure.

"We’ve talked about it," Flick stated regarding their response. "We need to play with confidence, and that’s important for tomorrow. If they play man-to-man, we’ll have to find the spaces, and how we do that, we showed them today, and we practiced it in training." This indicates a clear focus on tactical execution and spatial awareness during their preparations.

Barcelona's Champions League Ambitions

When questioned about his optimism regarding Barcelona's chances of winning the Champions League this season, the Blaugrana manager maintained a balanced perspective.

"This is football and many things can change," he remarked. "We have to be positive because there’s great quality in the squad. We’ll see if we’re capable of winning the Champions League, but we have to improve."

Considering Dani Olmo as a False Nine

A persistent issue for Barcelona recently has been the inconsistent contribution from the traditional number nine position, with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres experiencing a dip in form. Flick was asked whether Dani Olmo could offer a solution in a false nine role.

"It could be an option," Flick confirmed. "In matches like these, all the players are motivated. We need Ferran and Lewy at their best until the end of the season to achieve our goals. It’s crucial for us."

Olmo has previously showcased his capability as a false nine, notably scoring a hat-trick from that position last season. Despite this, Flick has generally favored deploying either Torres or Lewandowski in the central attacking role.
