Julian Alvarez Admits Uncertainty Over Atletico Madrid Future
Julian Alvarez, the Atletico Madrid forward, has cast doubt on his presence at the Metropolitano stadium next season. The Argentine international has faced persistent rumors of a summer departure, even as Atletico has attempted to dismiss any speculation regarding his potential exit.
For the past year, Alvarez has been continuously linked with a move to Barcelona, with some reports suggesting he is Joan Laporta's top candidate to succeed Robert Lewandowski. Furthermore, Premier League clubs Arsenal and Chelsea are also reportedly monitoring Alvarez's situation should he become available this summer.
Julian Alvarez on His Atletico Future: 'Maybe Yes, Maybe No'
Following Atletico's victory over Tottenham Hotspur, a match where Alvarez earned Man of the Match honors for scoring two goals in the Champions League, his inability to provide a direct answer about his future surprised many. He was initially questioned about Barcelona's reported interest.
“I have nothing to comment on this. These are topics frequently discussed, especially on social media where everyone shares their views, and it often escalates. I’ve never personally said anything. I'm content here, very happy, and competing in all ongoing tournaments,” he informed Diario AS.
“My statements have been misinterpreted; it's merely speculation that becomes exaggerated. I am pleased at Atlético, fulfilled, and committed. We are performing strongly in the Champions League and have reached the Copa del Rey final.”
When pressed for a clear declaration about his club for the next season, Alvarez hinted at the possibility of not remaining at the Metropolitano.
“How can I know? Perhaps yes, perhaps no; one can never be certain. I am extremely happy here. This question arises repeatedly, but my happiness remains. My focus is on the present, dedicating myself to improvement and giving my utmost. I have never uttered any negative words about the club. I am profoundly grateful; the supporters have shown me their warmth, and I am very content.”
Alvarez on His Goal-Scoring Form: 'The Goals Help Me Personally'
Looking ahead, Alvarez's Atletico squad will be well-placed for the upcoming return leg against Spurs.
“While the second leg will undoubtedly be challenging, our three-goal advantage provides significant confidence. We remain ambitious, striving for major achievements.”
Alvarez had only netted three goals throughout 2026, breaking a four-month La Liga drought with his strike against Real Oviedo. This recent brace marks his first multi-goal performance since September, a feat last achieved during Atletico’s 5-2 derby victory against Real Madrid.
“While this recent scoring burst is personally beneficial, I've consistently felt good about my game. It's often about scoring streaks; there was a period where goals eluded me, yet I always gave my absolute best. My teammates recognize and value this effort. Performance fluctuations are inherent in football. Goals weren't coming easily, but as a forward, and given my commitment and passion for this team, my aim is always to contribute through goals and assists.”
