La Liga Striker Rafa Mir Reacts to Sexual Assault Charges, Vows to Prove Innocence
Recent developments have emerged in the sexual assault case against La Liga striker Rafa Mir, stemming from an incident that reportedly occurred two years ago. Mir, who plays for Elche, was arrested in September 2024 following a filed complaint. Although he was released on bail after two days in custody, he remains under investigation.
Earlier this week, the Prosecutor's Office sought a 10.5-year prison sentence for Mir: nine years for the alleged crime of aggravated sexual assault with carnal access, and an additional 18 months for injuries sustained by the alleged victim.
Mir has consistently denied any wrongdoing. This week, speaking on 'Talks with Temo' (as reported by Marca), he addressed the ongoing situation, expressing confidence that his name will be cleared when the case goes to trial. He stated, "The investigation stage was very positive. Now we are waiting for the indictment. This is a shame, but I am very calm. I really want to go to trial, and my innocence will be proven. I am focusing on what is mine, on my work. The outside noise doesn’t affect me; I’m focused on myself, on my life."
Mir Also Accused of Racist Abuse
This week has also seen Mir face accusations of racially abusing Omar El Hilali during last weekend's La Liga match between Elche and Espanyol. The 28-year-old is alleged to have directed an anti-immigrant insult towards El Hilali, a defender born in Catalonia to a Moroccan family.
La Liga has acknowledged El Hilali's allegation and launched an investigation into the matter. Their disciplinary department is expected to deliver an outcome in the coming weeks, which will determine if Mir faces any sanctions as a result.
