Vinicius Jr. Backs Lamine Yamal Against Racist Abuse in Spain
Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has commended Lamine Yamal for his courage in addressing the racist abuse he and Egyptian players endured during a recent international match. Yamal, a Barcelona player, subsequently faced further hateful racist taunts during his club's encounter with Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano stadium this past weekend.
Following offensive chants of "Whoever doesn’t jump is a Muslim" during Spain's 0-0 draw against Egypt, Lamine Yamal used social media to denounce the incidents as "intolerable" and overtly racist. Catalan authorities are currently investigating these events, yet the widespread nature of the chants at the RCDE Stadium caused significant alarm.
Lamine Yamal Targeted by Racist Abuse at Metropolitano
Disturbing new footage has emerged from Barcelona’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Saturday night, once again showing the 18-year-old being subjected to racial slurs. As he approached the corner flag to take a kick, shouts of "Go to Morocco" and the N-word could be clearly heard from sections of the crowd.
Vinicius Praises Yamal's Public Stance
Ahead of Real Madrid's match against Bayern Munich, Vinicius Junior was questioned about these incidents. The Brazilian forward has become a prominent figure in the battle against racism within Spanish football in recent years.
"This is a complex issue that regrettably occurs constantly," Vinicius stated. "It's crucial that Lamine has spoken out; it can empower others. I hope Lamine continues to champion this fight. We, as footballers, have financial means, but impoverished black individuals face even greater hardships than we do. I'm not claiming that Spain, Germany, or Portugal are inherently racist nations, but racists exist in every country. If we unite in this struggle, I truly hope that other players and people in general will cease to suffer these indignities."
It appears undeniable that racial abuse is escalating in Spanish football venues, despite La Liga implementing stricter penalties. While the league has intensified its efforts in pursuing cases of racial discrimination, even leading to multiple prison sentences, these measures seemingly haven't curbed the pervasive problem.
