The popular physics-based climbing simulator “Peak” has introduced its charming scout characters as new skins in Epic Games’ battle royale, Fortnite. While the designs are adapted for Fortnite’s style, retaining much of their original appeal despite slight changes, players are expressing strong dissatisfaction with the pricing, not the aesthetics.
As highlighted by a user on social media, purchasing a single customizable Peak Scout skin in Fortnite requires 2,000 V-Bucks, which translates to approximately $22.40 (or $22.99 when buying the 2,400 V-Buck pack). This amount is nearly three times the cost of the actual “Peak” game, which has been available for as low as $4.85 during sales. Essentially, one could acquire almost three copies of the indie game—enough for oneself and a couple of friends—for the price of just one in-game character outfit, which doesn’t even include accompanying items like a backpack, pickaxe, or wrap.
Even before the recent increase in V-Bucks prices, a single Scout skin was priced around $17.80 (or $22.99 with a 2,800 V-Bucks pack), still equating to over two copies of the “Peak” game. This pricing strategy mirrors a similar controversy from 2024 involving Fortnite’s “Lethal Company” skins, which also significantly exceeded the cost of their respective indie game.
Many players view this pricing as a direct insult to the “Peak” developers. One widely shared comment on Twitter stated, “That’s actually a slap in the face to the Peak developers. Like: ‘Hey, we at Fortnite feel our skin of your character is worth well over double the price of your fuck ass game.'”
Given Epic Games’ recent large-scale layoffs of over 1,000 employees, alongside CEO Tim Sweeney’s admission that the company is “spending significantly more than we’re making,” it’s improbable that players will see better value in future in-game purchases.
The recommendation, therefore, leans towards acquiring the “Peak” game itself, especially during a sale at its lowest price of $4.85, allowing multiple friends and family members to enjoy the original experience, rather than investing in a single cosmetic item in Fortnite.
