Barcelona defender Gerard Martín has clarified his intentions, stating he is fully committed to the club despite recent transfer speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.
Martín enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 season, making 42 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish champions. The 23-year-old delivered notable performances, particularly on the European stage in the Champions League.
Several Premier League teams, including Wolves and Bournemouth, were reportedly monitoring the left-back with a view to a potential transfer for the 2025-26 season. However, Martín directly addressed and dismissed these rumors.
“These are things that naturally arise,” Martín commented upon his return to Barcelona. “Ultimately, I don`t pay attention to them. My focus is entirely on Barça, and honestly, I`m happy with how my season went.”
He added, “I believe the coaching staff is also satisfied with my performance, my development, and the areas I still need to work on. Truly, I am not considering anything other than Barcelona. I feel calm about the situation.”
Martín`s remarks came after he returned to Barcelona following his withdrawal from the Spain Under-21 European Championship squad. The full-back sustained a hand injury during Spain`s 3-2 victory over Slovakia on June 11th and is scheduled for surgery next week.
His immediate priority will be rehabilitation before commencing preparations for the 2025-26 campaign. While Alejandro Balde was often the preferred choice at left-back under Hansi Flick last season, Martín`s emergence means he will now provide strong competition for a place in the starting lineup.
Notably, Martín provided two crucial assists in the second leg of the Champions League semi-finals against Inter Milan, initiating a potential comeback for the Catalan side. Although Barcelona ultimately didn`t progress from that tie, Martín`s contribution highlighted his attacking threat.
The 23-year-old does have aspects of his defensive game that require improvement to secure a regular starting role under Flick. However, the positive sign for Martín is that the former Bayern Munich manager has shown a willingness to trust and nurture young talent within his squad.
