Gianfelice Facchetti, son of Inter legend Giacinto, offered his personal perspective on Inter`s journey leading up to this season`s Champions League final.
Speaking to Il Giorno, he recalled his habits for watching crucial matches: “I chose to share the experience of the final won in Madrid with my son, who was only a few months old at the time. I was also at home for the final we lost in Istanbul. I prioritize watching the game with certain people over feeling obligated to be at the stadium no matter what. This year, Inter played exceptionally well in the Champions League; we managed to eliminate two giants like Bayern and Barcelona. I actually followed the crucial second leg against Barcelona under unusual circumstances. I was on stage performing a play about Árpád Weisz. A lady provided me with updates on the partial score, 2-0, after the show finished – rather amusingly, her surname was Facchetti, but she`s a Juventus supporter! I followed the final part of that match from my car on the drive home. When I turned on the radio, Barcelona had just scored to make it 3-2. Then it quickly leveled at 3-3. At that moment, I turned the radio off. My wife informed me of Inter`s 4-3 victory via text message. I then switched the radio back on just for the final minute, listening to Repice`s commentary on Radio Rai.”
Concluding his remarks, Facchetti gave his assessment ahead of the final match: “I feel optimistic. A one-off match provides more opportunities, even if you`re starting as the underdog. Against City, we competed intensely until the very end; the significant gap with the English side that many predicted beforehand wasn`t evident on the pitch. As for who might be decisive? I`d focus on Taremi, now that he`s fully recovered. And the opponent I perhaps worry about most? That would be Hakimi, the former Inter player.”
