Hansi Flick: Frenkie de Jong is ready to start for Barcelona

Barcelona’s manager, Hansi Flick, has indicated that midfielder Frenkie de Jong is available to be included in the starting lineup for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash against Atletico Madrid. De Jong has recently returned to the field after a six-week absence due to a muscle tear sustained in late February.

Addressing the media before the match, Flick emphasized the need for his team to exhibit both offensive bravery and strong defensive organization. The German coach also cautioned his players about the intimidating atmosphere they should expect at the Metropolitano stadium.

“The atmosphere in the stadium will be fantastic,” Flick stated. “We need a strong and stable defense, but also to be brave in attack. We have to press, we have to go forward. We must capitalize on every chance. This is where we can make a difference, as seen in our recent games.”

Frenkie de Jong could feature from the start, according to Hansi Flick

De Jong made a brief appearance in the final ten minutes of the Catalan derby against Espanyol, contributing an assist for Marcus Rashford in the closing stages of a 4-1 victory. Flick confirmed that de Jong is now fit enough to start the upcoming match.

“Frenkie is much better, significantly so compared to Marc Bernal,” Flick commented. “It’s a tough decision for him. Frenkie is also capable of starting. We will see what I decide later.”

A significant selection dilemma for Barcelona in their midfield revolves around who will partner Pedri Gonzalez. With Eric Garcia expected to move to defense to compensate for the suspended Pau Cubarsi, an opening arises for either de Jong or Gavi. Marc Casado has seen limited game time in important matches recently.

“Of course, Gavi can play,” Flick added. “Gavi is a player who gives his absolute all for this team and the club. On the pitch, he fears nothing, and that is crucial. We will decide tomorrow where and when he plays; we have time, and we will make the final decision this evening.”

Praise for Lamine Yamal

A considerable amount of Barcelona’s hopes rest on the young forward Lamine Yamal, who has been in exceptional form recently.

“Lamine has performed exceptionally well in recent games,” Flick praised. “He needs to continue doing what he does best, being among the world’s elite in one-on-one situations and dribbling. We also need to give him the option to pass. It’s vital that we play as a cohesive unit, not as individuals. We have many players with immense quality, but so does Atletico. Last time, I mentioned that games are often decided by momentum, and hopefully, it will be on our side.”

When asked about the pressure he faces, Lamine Yamal, before Flick’s press conference, described it as a positive attribute rather than a burden. The 18-year-old is anticipated to form the front three alongside Marcus Rashford and either Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, or Ferran Torres.
