Barcelona manager Hansi Flick expressed satisfaction with his team’s Saturday night victory over Atletico Madrid, which extended their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points after Real Madrid’s earlier defeat. Despite the significant win, Flick observed that the players kept celebrations subdued in the dressing room.
Overall, Flick appeared content with his team’s performance, even acknowledging their difficulties in breaking down a ten-man Atletico in the second half.
Flick elaborated, stating, “We faced ten men and made every effort to score. They defended exceptionally well despite being a man down, but we persisted until we found the net. These three points are incredibly valuable. Playing here against such a strong opponent, with this intense atmosphere, is never easy.”
He added, “Today demonstrated our approach to both defense and attack. We maintained control of the game. I believe solid defensive rest is also crucial. Gerard and Pau performed well, covering the flanks effectively.”
Regarding the seven-point advantage now held over Real Madrid in the league standings, Flick refrained from making definitive statements about the potential outcome of La Liga.
“The team is pleased; everyone understands the magnitude of today’s points,” Flick remarked. “However, the job isn’t finished. Wednesday brings another crucial match. They are happy, but we won’t over-celebrate.”
He continued, “I’m not concerned with the Real Madrid result; my focus is solely on my team. Coming back from the international break, where players were with their national squads, is challenging for everyone – for us, for Atletico, for Real Madrid. But it’s part of our profession, and we must adapt.”
Gerard Martin’s Red Card Reversal
One of the game’s most contentious moments involved Gerard Martin’s initial red card, which was subsequently reduced to a yellow after a VAR review.
Flick commented, “To me, it was evident he was attempting to clear the ball, so I didn’t see it as a foul. Ultimately, VAR intervened, and that was beneficial for us. I did not consider it a red card offense.”
Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford’s Futures
Flick was also asked whether Robert Lewandowski’s decisive goal could prove title-winning and if it might lead to a contract extension for the striker.
“That’s looking a bit too far ahead,” Flick responded. “I’m pleased with Robert, and I’m happy with all the players. As far as I’m concerned, nothing is decided; we still have eight matches remaining.”
A question also arose concerning Marcus Rashford, who recently scored a significant goal.
Flick offered a similar response: “Like with Robert, that’s a matter for the end of the season. Today, he demonstrated his one-on-one ability effectively, performing well. I’m pleased with Marcus, and he needs to continue showcasing his talent.”
Lamine Yamal’s Frustration
Even with the dramatic victory, Lamine Yamal was visibly frustrated upon leaving the pitch. While Flick admitted he wasn’t certain of the exact reason, he expressed satisfaction with his young star forward’s efforts.
“I don’t know precisely what occurred,” Flick stated. “There was a lot of emotion. Lamine made every attempt to score; not everything was perfect, but he was constantly trying and always available. We have three days to prepare for the next game, and I’m sure he’ll be in a much better mood then.”
Flick on Bernal and Araujo Injuries
When questioned about the injuries to Ronald Araujo and Marc Bernal, both of whom were substituted, Flick hinted at their potential availability for Wednesday’s match.
Regarding the injuries, Flick stated, “Ronald is ultimately out. Bernal had problems with his ankle. We have our work to do. Every game is about winning, and it’s never simple. We require that hunger and intense focus.”
He concluded by emphasizing the upcoming Champions League fixture: “We understand the Champions League is a different challenge; every player finds an extra 5-10% to give. We all aspire to reach the semi-finals. We have three more days to prepare and rest slightly for our home game. These are the matches that make our job worthwhile.”
Barcelona is set to face Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Camp Nou. The return leg will follow a week later, on Tuesday, at the Metropolitano.
