Israel Accuses Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal of Inciting Hatred Against Jewish People

Israel has accused Barcelona’s young talent, Lamine Yamal, of “fomenting hatred” against Jewish people through his actions on social media. This accusation follows the player’s decision to display a Palestinian flag during Barcelona’s open-top bus parade, which celebrated their recent La Liga title win.

The 18-year-old Spain international garnered international attention when he raised a large Palestinian flag from the top of the celebratory bus. Notably, Yamal did not make any accompanying statements. During the same parade, teammate Robert Lewandowski was seen waving the Estelada, the flag advocating for Catalan independence.

Israeli Defense Minister Condemns Yamal’s Actions

Three days after the event, Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, publicly accused the Barcelona teenager of inciting and promoting hatred towards both Israel and the Jewish community. He posted on social media, stating, “Lamine Yamal chose to incite and foment hatred against Israel while our soldiers are fighting the terrorist organization Hamas, an organization that massacred, raped, burned, and murdered Jewish children, women, and elderly on October 7. Whoever supports this type of message should ask themselves: Does he consider this humanitarian? Is this moral?”

Katz further elaborated, “As the Minister of Defence of the State of Israel, I will not remain silent in the face of incitement against Israel and against the Jewish people. I expect a great and respected club like FC Barcelona to distance itself from these statements and make it unequivocally clear that there is no place for incitement or for support of terrorism.”

Barcelona Manager Hansi Flick Comments on Yamal’s Decision

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick also expressed his views on Lamine Yamal’s decision to display the Palestinian flag, admitting that he “normally, doesn’t like these things.” Flick revealed that he had spoken with Yamal prior to the incident, suggesting that the focus should remain on the team’s celebratory achievement rather than political declarations. However, Flick acknowledged Yamal’s maturity and his right to make his own choices.
