Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong on a five-year contract. The move sees him fill the right-back position left vacant following Trent Alexander-Arnold`s recent departure.
The 24-year-old Dutch international made the switch to Merseyside from Bayer Leverkusen, where he was a key member of their undefeated Bundesliga-winning squad during the 2023/24 season.
Last season, Frimpong showcased his attacking prowess by scoring five goals and providing 12 assists across all competitions. This offensive contribution aligns well with the requirements for Arne Slot’s team, especially when compared to his predecessor, Alexander-Arnold, who recorded four goals and eight assists in the previous campaign.
Jeremie Frimpong commented on his move: “Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. For me, it was like, whatever you guys [his agents] do, just get this done. It went quite smooth, there was no problems.”
He also addressed the fanbase, adding: “To the Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work rate, and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, do everything together. I’m just excited to be here.”
Frimpong steps in to replace a player who, over the past nine years, became deeply embedded in the history of Liverpool Football Club, contributing significantly to major trophy wins including two Premier League titles, a UEFA Champions League, an FA Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and a FIFA Club World Cup.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s long association with Liverpool concludes slightly ahead of schedule. Real Madrid agreed to an early £10 million transfer deal, enabling the English full-back to participate in this summer`s Club World Cup, despite his contract officially running until June 30th.
The transfer marks Frimpong`s return to the United Kingdom after spending more than four years playing abroad. He originally left Celtic for Germany in January 2021, having previously developed in the Manchester City youth academy alongside players like Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Eric García, and Morgan Rogers before his move to Scotland.
Liverpool’s upcoming friendly match against Milan on July 26th at the Kai Tak Sports Park in Hong Kong is anticipated to be Frimpong’s first opportunity to demonstrate his abilities on the pitch while wearing the Liverpool shirt.
