Barcelona is actively seeking a new striker for the upcoming summer transfer window, especially as Robert Lewandowski is expected to leave upon his contract’s expiration. While several candidates are under consideration by the club’s sporting division, Erling Haaland’s name has recently resurfaced in discussions.
Reports earlier this week indicated that Victor Font’s associates engaged in discussions with Manchester City concerning a potential preferential purchase option for Erling Haaland. Despite the Norwegian forward being contracted with the Premier League club until 2034, it was suggested that Barcelona could gain an advantage over rivals like Real Madrid should he decide to depart before then.
However, even as Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, denied the occurrence of such talks, Font confirmed ongoing negotiations with Manchester City, as reported by Sport. He stated, “We are negotiating a purchase option for Erling Haaland for when he wants to leave Manchester City.”
Laporta Blasts Font Over Haaland “Lie”
Font made these revelations during the concluding presidential debate against Joan Laporta. Laporta, referencing Pimenta’s previous denial, sharply retorted regarding the Haaland claims: “The player’s agent has already denied what Mr. Font has claimed. This lie that Mr. Font has constructed has already been denied. It backfired, you have no sense of ridicule. They have already denied what you say.”
While Haaland wasn’t a primary summer target for Barcelona, securing him in the future would be a monumental achievement for any president, be it Font or Laporta. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that the Catalan club will hold any distinct advantage over other top teams eager to lure the 25-year-old from the Etihad Stadium, where he is currently expected to stay for another eight years.
