Joan Laporta Responds to Xavi: Flick Succeeds with Same Players, Font Accused of Electoral Sabotage

Recent developments could significantly influence the upcoming Barcelona presidential election. While Joan Laporta is widely considered the leading candidate for re-election, explosive allegations from club legend Xavi Hernandez might shift voter sentiment towards rival Victor Font.

During a sensational interview published over the weekend, Xavi asserted that his dismissal in summer 2024 was orchestrated not by Laporta directly, but by his advisor Alejandro Echevarría, who Xavi claims has been covertly managing the club from behind the scenes.

In a presidential debate with Font (as reported by Sport), Laporta used the platform to respond to Xavi’s accusations. He vehemently refuted the claims and provided several justifications for the decision to part ways with Xavi. Laporta expressed his dismay, stating, “It hurt me. When I saw these statements, I immediately thought of Flick. Being president demands making tough decisions. With Xavi, I foresaw a continued losing streak if he remained, and it’s reassuring to witness the turnaround since his departure. The very players who struggled under Xavi are now achieving victories with Flick.”

He further elaborated, “What truly pains me is seeing individuals manipulated to harm my reputation, particularly someone from my inner circle like Echevarría. They defended Xavi even when his continued presence was indefensible, including Rafa Yuste. Xavi appears intent on creating chaos, but I believe there’s someone else orchestrating things behind him, and I suspect that person is Víctor Font. Font is attempting to tarnish this electoral process. It’s convenient for him that a club member has filed a complaint rife with falsehoods. This is a tactic I find distasteful.”

Laporta Addresses Xavi’s Claims Regarding Messi

Laporta additionally dismissed Xavi’s assertion that he rejected the opportunity to bring Lionel Messi back to the club in 2023. Xavi had suggested this decision stemmed from Laporta’s apprehension of a power imbalance with the legendary player, given their reportedly strained relationship.

Laporta clarified, “We have already proposed erecting a statue of Messi and holding a tribute match once the stadium renovation is complete. Regarding his return, when Messi couldn’t be renewed due to financial constraints, Xavi approached me in mid-March 2023, expressing Messi’s desire to come back. However, in May, Jorge Messi informed me that the pressure would be too immense, and they ultimately opted for Inter Miami.”
