Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has refuted claims that he has been in discussions with Real Madrid about returning to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer. Reports had suggested he was a frontrunner to replace interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa, with no definitive candidate yet emerging for the managerial position.
The possibility of Jurgen Klopp taking the helm has also been dismissed recently. Mourinho remains one of several names linked to the role, alongside Massimiliano Allegri, Mauricio Pochettino, and Unai Emery. However, recent speculation indicates that Real Madrid President Florentino Perez may favor Mourinho.
Mourinho asserted on Friday, as reported by Marca, “No, nobody from Real Madrid spoke to me, I can guarantee that. I’ve been in football for too many years, just like you have in journalism, and we’re used to these things, but nothing from Real Madrid.”
Mourinho Remains Firm on No Real Madrid Contact
When questioned further, Mourinho was resolute in his denial of any communication with Los Blancos.
“Nothing. I can’t say anything more. I already told your colleague that, regarding Real Madrid, nothing, and regarding Benfica, you already know the situation. I have one year left on my contract with Benfica, and that’s all,” he stated.
Perez Reportedly Driving Mourinho Speculation
It appears that Florentino Perez is the primary driver behind the links to Mourinho, with his name reportedly being leaked to the press this week to gauge public reaction. Perez and Mourinho shared a close relationship during Mourinho’s previous tenure at the club from 2009 to 2013. The Real Madrid President is reportedly leading the search for Arbeloa’s successor, but a clear frontrunner has not yet surfaced.
One area of concern regarding Mourinho’s potential return is his response to the racist incident involving Vinicius Junior at the Estadio da Luz this season. Reports suggest that the Real Madrid dressing room is not enthusiastic about his potential reappointment.
